SDGs, rated 17th in Japan this year! We dropped two ranks from last year.

The 2020 edition of the SDG Index and Dashboards Report, which analyzes countries’ progress in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has been published.

Japan is ranked 17th.

2016 16th / out of 149 countries
2017 11th / out of 157 countries
2018 15th / out of 156 countries
2019 15th / out of 162 countries
and
2020 17th / out of 166 countries

Compared to 2019, Japan also gained more points, but was overtaken by Ireland and Switzerland. The reason for the drop in rankings?

Points were reduced from the previous year for goal 10, “Eliminate inequality among people and countries”. Also, goal 5 “Eliminate gender equality,” goal 13 “Take concrete measures to address climate change,” and goal 14 “Make the oceans more plentiful. Let’s Protect” is flat.
